Dr Okello is a Senior Researcher and Exposure Scientist with expertise in exposure assessment, public health and epidemiology, having earned a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Aberdeen, where he focused on air quality monitoring, exposure assessment, and using low-cost sensors to close the air quality data gap in sub-Saharan Africa. Inspired by his lived experiences growing up in Uganda and discomfort with smoke, Dr Okello is passionate about raising awareness on air pollution’s effect on health and the environment, increasing access to air quality data, integrating evidence into policy and practice to foster advocacy and drive action.
Exciting wins include:
- Leading the scientific committee to co-develop Uganda’s first-ever Air Quality Standards.
- Supporting the deployment of over 130 low-cost air quality sensors in Uganda and over 80 sensors in 6 African cities.
- Co-designing e-mobility pathways, increasing electric two-wheelers from 150 to over 2,000 in three years.
- Providing local evidence on the link between air pollution and healthcare visits and admissions in Kampala to inform policy and practice.
- Developing repositories for air quality management strategies in 44 countries Africa and 102 countries globally.
