Welcome to the Accra Cityzens Hub
Empowering youth for healthier urban living through policy inclusion.
Our Mission
The UrbanBetter Accra Cityzens Hub is hosted by GAYO (Green Africa Youth Organization), and is focused on empowering youth to advocate for healthy and sustainable urban environments. This Hub serves as a focal point for citizen science activities, community engagement, and advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing youth participation in urban decision-making. Our hub hosts – GAYO strengths lie in its extensive experience in community mobilization and capacity building, enabling them to effectively lead initiatives that foster youth engagement. |
Our Work
Our work is focused on the following key areas: Climate change, circular economy and disaster risk reduction.
Advocacy & Support

Through initiatives led by our hub hosts such as the Zero Waste Project, we empower young people to shape climate policy and champion effective waste management at the municipal level, strengthening community resilience and encouraging active participation in environmental decision-making.
Movement Building & Facilitation

We mobilise youth to engage in climate activism by raising awareness about air quality issues and empowering them through campaigns that promote community participation and collective action for healthier, more resilient environments.
Local Capacity Building

We strengthen community resilience at the municipal level by building the capacity of youth and environmental health officers through focused training and joint initiatives that advance climate action and support sustainable urban development.

Our Projects
The UrbanBetter Accra Cityzens Hub “Cityzens for Clean Air” project, hosted by the Green Africa Youth Organization and funded by the Clean Air Fund, mobilises over 200 young volunteers in Accra as citizen scientists and clean air advocates. Using a unique approach that combines physical activity (running), wearable air quality sensors, and a custom mobile app, participants collect real-time data on air pollution and the urban environment. This data fuels public awareness efforts, evidence-based advocacy campaigns, and local policymaker engagement. So far, the project has launched over four advocacy campaigns, engaged more than three national-level policymakers, and formed partnerships with multiple civil society and national organisations, all united in the pursuit of cleaner air for Accra.
