Welcome to the Lagos Cityzens Hub
Empowering youth to lead the transformation of Lagos into an eco-friendly city through advocacy, community mobilisation, and data-driven action for a healthier and more sustainable urban future.
Our Mission
We are on a mission to connect and support communities and organisations that are putting youth at the centre of urban health change.
The UrbanBetter Lagos Cityzens Hub is hosted by Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) is dedicated to advancing air quality monitoring and precision advocacy for healthier urban living. This Hub empowers youth and local communities with data-driven tools and knowledge to understand and act on air pollution challenges in Lagos.
We are building an ecosystem of civil society organisations and communities focused on youth leading the charge to use data on air quality, natural and built environment, gathered through citizen science combined with physical activity to engage decision makers, residents, and other civil society organisations in improving the health of the city through strategic and informed advocacy. The Hub strengthens public participation in environmental governance and promotes equitable urban planning. Our hub host LUDI brings organisations and people together to advocate for a more sustainable Lagos.
Our Goal is to: Equip youth with tools and skills for real-time air quality, climate change and other urban health-related monitoring, strengthen youth capacity to influence sustainable urban policies, and foster community-led solutions for cleaner, healthier urban environments.
Our Work
Our work is focused on the following key areas: Air Pollution, Urban Health and Transformation, Physical Activity, Advocacy Capacity Building, Youth and Community Engagement, Climate Change
Advocacy & Support

We have led capacity building workshops to train Cityzens on best practices as it concerns advocacy. This feeds into how to use that to influence policy, and putting pressure on and engaging decision makers.
Movement Building & Facilitation

We focus on movement building and facilitation through our Lagos Cityzens community of 350+ members, with broader engagement across professionals, fitness groups, students, government youths, and citizens. Over the years, we’ve co-organized and facilitated impactful events such as the World Athletics Running for Clean Air Workshop (Feb 2025) and an Advocacy Workshop for an MIT PhD researcher.
Knowledge Exchange

This we have done by teaching our models on data gathering, civic demand to action to several groups through events we organise or are invited to speak at. For example the Climate Action African Forum in June of 2024 where we spoke about citizen science.
Local Capacity Building

From our various activities, we have been able to build the local capacity of community members across Lagos. We have built the capacity of Cityzens and community members in engaging with decision makers and making demands, and to take practical actions for a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Hub is led by a Coordinator who oversees its operations and ensures the effective implementation of its goals. Supporting this work are dedicated Run Leaders and a growing network of volunteer youth Cityzens who are trained in citizen science and data-informed advocacy.
Hub Coordinator: Mainasara Waziri

Mainasara Waziri
Waziri Mainasara is an Economist, Environmentalist, and Air Quality Advocate passionate about applying economic principles, policy evaluation, and people-centred approaches to drive sustainable change. With a master’s degree in Economics, he brings a macroeconomic lens to environmental and development challenges, generating insights that inform better decision-making. He has connected policymakers, community leaders, and young people through platforms for dialogue and collaboration, inspiring collective action while strengthening community bonds, belonging, and well-being. He has also trained and mentored young people in sustainable practices such as active mobility, citizen science, and advocacy - helping them build resilience and amplify their voices. Currently with UrbanBetter, he leads efforts to close Africa’s air quality data gap through youth-driven citizen science, data-informed advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, producing actionable insights and policy recommendations for healthier, more sustainable cities. He studied Economics (BSc and MSc) at the University of Abuja and the University of Lagos, respectively. His concern for physical and mental health led him to co-found Fit Trackers, a running and fitness group that promotes healthy living. He also founded the World Environmental Education Desk (wEEd), a social media initiative that simplifies environmental issues and drives advocacy, particularly through TikTok. Beyond his professional work, he is a fitness enthusiast, runner, and adventure seeker who brings energy, resilience, and adaptability to every project.
